Product Overview & Area of Application
The GEMA MDC 400 base module is a heating module body for central heating systems and is supplied without a heating element. It serves as a hydraulic base for integrating a separately selected 400 V electric heating cartridge into the heating circuit.
The module is suitable for additional heating of heating water in systems with an existing primary heat source, for example with solid fuel boilers, water-bearing fireplace stoves, gas or oil boilers, as well as heat pumps. Typical areas of application are supplementary heating, frost protection support, emergency heat, or the use of surplus PV electricity via a suitable electric heating cartridge.
Technology & Equipment
The GEMA MDC 400 base module consists of a steel container with raw steel on the inside and a powder-coated surface on the outside. Thermal insulation is provided by 50 mm polyurethane foam; the outer cladding is made of plastic with a lid made of ABS plastic.
For hydraulic integration, the module has connection stubs with internal thread G 1 1/4". The receptacle for the electric heating cartridge is designed as an internal thread G 1 1/2". For the MDC 400, 400 V heating cartridges with 3.0 kW, 4.5 kW, or 6.0 kW are intended; the heating cartridge must be selected separately and is not included in the scope of delivery for this item.
Everyday Benefits
The base module enables a clear separation between the heating module and the heating cartridge. This allows the appropriate power rating of the heating cartridge to be selected specifically according to the system concept, electrical design, and intended purpose.
During operation, the module can provide support as an additional heat source when heating water in the heating circuit is to be electrically reheated. The specific function, temperature control, and electrical wiring depend on the heating cartridge used and the professionally installed system control.
System Integration & Compatibility
The GEMA MDC 400 base module is intended for open or closed central heating systems with appropriate safety devices. Water or a glycol mixture suitable for heating systems up to a maximum concentration of 50% is permitted as the medium.
Integration takes place in the parallel heating circuit on the flow or return of the main heat source. For proper operation, a functioning safety valve and an additional circulation pump must be planned to ensure the required minimum flow rate of the separately installed heating cartridge.

Assembly
Assembly, hydraulic integration and electrical connection of the separately installed heating cartridge must be carried out by qualified specialists. The module is integrated into the parallel heating circuit of the main heat source; when routing the pipes, ensure complete filling and reliable venting.
The MDC 400 can be operated horizontally or vertically in accordance with the German manufacturer's documentation. The final installation position must be checked against the currently supplied original documentation before assembly.
Notes
This article describes exclusively the GEMA MDC 400 base module without heating element. Suitable 400 V heating cartridges with 3.0 kW, 4.5 kW or 6.0 kW are selected separately and must match the electrical design of the system.
Operation without water is not permitted. The electrical supply to the installed heating cartridge may only be connected after the system has been filled and vented. The safety valve, circulation pump, fuse protection, cable cross-section and control connection must be designed on site to suit the system and the selected heating cartridge.
